XChat Getting Started Guide: Download, Setup, and Your First Session
A practical guide for new XChat players: how to download and install, log in with Discord, create a character, and fix the most common first-session issues.
XChat is a free adult social world with real players. If you want more context before diving in, start with What is XChat.
System Requirements
Before downloading, confirm your machine can run it. XChat uses hardware ray tracing throughout the renderer, so it needs a ray-tracing GPU.
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10/11 or Linux |
| CPU | Ryzen 5 3600 / i5-10400 or better |
| GPU | RTX 2070 / RX 6700 XT / Arc A750 or better |
| VRAM | 8 GB |
| RAM | 8 GB |
| Storage | SSD, ~18 GB free |
Older cards without ray tracing may run it at lower quality, but aren't supported.
Laptop users specifically: This is the most common setup issue and it is covered in detail in the troubleshooting section below. The short version: you need to manually force XChat to run on the discrete GPU, not the integrated one.
For a full breakdown of GPU compatibility by tier, see XChat system requirements.
Step 1: Download
Download XChat free from xchat2.com/download.
Windows: Download and run XChat-Windows-x86_64.exe (~13 MB). The launcher downloads and installs XChat automatically (~18 GB) to your user folder, no admin rights required. Plan for download time on slower connections. After install the launcher keeps it up to date automatically.
Linux: A native build, not a Windows executable run through Proton or another compatibility layer. Mark the AppImage as executable and run it. Fewer players have tested Linux than Windows, so expect more bugs and report them on Discord. Driver and GPU setup are in XChat on Linux.
Do not download XChat from any source other than xchat2.com. Third-party download sites are not authorized and you cannot verify what you are getting. The official site is the only source.
Step 2: Discord Login
When you first launch XChat, you sign in with Discord in your browser. There is no separate XChat account or password, and your Discord password never goes to XChat. If you don't have a Discord account, create a free one at discord.com first.
Step 3: Character Creation
After your first sign-in, you create your character before entering the world. Characters are saved server-side and tied to your account, so you will not redo this every session.
The creator uses real-time lighting, so the character you see is close to how they will look in the world. The quality difference versus older engines is visible even at this stage.
Take your time here. Character creation is not something you need to rush, and your choices persist across sessions.

Step 4: In the World
After character creation you enter the shared world with other players.
Type to talk. Type a message and your character says it out loud. No microphone needed.
Adults only. Nothing is behind a toggle or a paid tier.

Common First-Session Issues
Laptop users: GPU routing
This is the most frequent issue for new players and the one most worth reading carefully if you are on a laptop.
Most laptops with a dedicated GPU also have integrated graphics (Intel or AMD iGPU) on the processor itself. Windows and laptop manufacturers default to routing applications through the integrated GPU to save battery. When XChat is routed to the iGPU, it may run at much lower quality or produce a black screen. It will not give you a clear error message saying "wrong GPU."
To fix this on NVIDIA laptops:
- Right-click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Go to "Manage 3D Settings," then the "Program Settings" tab.
- Add XChat to the list and set the preferred graphics processor to "High-performance NVIDIA processor."
- Save and relaunch XChat.
To fix this on AMD laptops with AMD iGPU + AMD discrete GPU:
- Open AMD Adrenalin software.
- Go to the Graphics tab and find the switchable graphics or per-application settings.
- Set XChat to run on the high-performance GPU.
- Save and relaunch.
If you are on a desktop with only one GPU, this is not an issue for you.
Shader compilation on first launch
On the first launch after installing (or after a major update), XChat will compile shaders. This is a one-time process that can take several minutes. The screen may appear frozen or loading with a progress bar. Let it complete. Do not close the application during this process. After the first compilation, subsequent launches are significantly faster.
Where to find other players
If you enter the world and it feels empty, this is a population timing issue rather than a problem with your installation. Check the Discord server to see when peak hours are for your timezone.
Login not completing
If the Discord login step opens your browser but does not complete back in the client, try the following: make sure you are logged into Discord in the browser that opens, complete the authorization, and wait a few seconds for the client to receive the confirmation. If it still does not complete, close and relaunch the XChat client and try again.
What to Do Next
Join the Discord
The XChat Discord community is the best place to find other players, check for updates, report issues, and ask questions. The community is active and the development team posts updates and patch notes there. If you run into something that is not covered in this guide, the Discord is where you will find current answers.

FAQ
Do I need a microphone to play?
No. XChat uses a type-to-talk system where you type text and your character speaks it with a TTS voice. No microphone is used at any point.
Can I play on Mac?
Not currently. XChat has Windows and Linux builds available now. A macOS build is on the roadmap with no confirmed release date. Mac users who want an adult social world today have Second Life as the main option, though its rendering engine is significantly older.
Is XChat free?
Yes. XChat is free to download and play with no subscription. No credit card is required. There is no paid tier that unlocks adult content. Content is accessible on a free account as part of the platform baseline.
What GPU do I need?
XChat needs a ray-tracing GPU: RTX 2070 / RX 6700 XT / Arc A750 or better. Older cards without ray tracing may run it at lower quality, but aren't supported. The XChat system requirements page covers compatibility in full.
How do I find other players?
Check the Discord community for when other players are online and to find people to meet in-world.
Is XChat safe to download?
Download only from xchat2.com/download. The client from the official site is XChat and nothing else. For more detail, see Is XChat safe.
Can I play on Linux?
Yes. XChat has a native Linux build, not a Windows executable running through compatibility software. Fewer players have tested it than Windows, so expect more bugs and report them on Discord.
How is XChat different from 3DXChat?
XChat is built on Unreal Engine 5 with hardware ray tracing and is free. 3DXChat runs on Unity 2021 and costs $9.99 per month. 3DXChat has a larger established community and Lovense support; XChat's Lovense support is planned. XChat has significantly better graphics and no subscription cost. They are separate platforms with similar names. See XChat vs 3DXChat for a full comparison.
XChat launched but I see a black screen or it crashed immediately. What do I do?
The most likely cause is the GPU routing issue described in the troubleshooting section above, particularly on laptops. Force XChat to use the discrete GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Adrenalin. If you are on a desktop with a qualifying GPU and still see this issue, ask in the Discord where the support channels will have current known issues and fixes.
